“The strongest roots grow in the darkest soil.”
We live in a world that celebrates achievements but rarely talks about the struggles behind them. We congratulate people on their success, admire their confidence and applaud their victories. Behind every achievement, there may be a story of silent sacrifices, self-doubt and moments when giving up seemed easier than continuing. We grew up believing that SUCCESS is a straight road. To keep moving on this path; we are taught to work hard, achieve good marks and make best decisions. Life rarely follows the path we imagined for ourselves. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things do not work out. An examination result disappoints us. An opportunity slips away. A decision turns out to be wrong. In these moments, a SETBACK feels like the end of story. But what if it is simply a different beginning? What if it is the beginning of a version of ourselves we have not yet discovered?
“Sometimes the moments that break our plans are the very moments that build our character.”
The Fear Of Falling Behind: When Hard Work Does Not Lead Where We Expected
For me, failure often feels heavier than it actually is. Academic marks, competition results and expectations from family and society can make me believe that my worth is measured by my achievements. It is about losing a future I had imagined for myself. I experienced this feeling during my journey with the NEET examination. Like many students, I had worked hard with the dream of securing a seat in a government medical college. I invested my time, energy, sleepless nights and hopes into that dream. But things did not turn out as I had hoped. I could not secure a seat in a government medical college, while many of my friends did. I was happy for them. It was difficult to watch people I had studied alongside moving towards a future I had once imagined for myself. For a while, I questioned everything. Had all those hours of studying, all those sleepless nights been in vain? Had my sacrifices meant nothing? Was I not capable enough? The hardest part was not just the result itself. It was the feeling that I had given something my best and still had to accept that it was not enough to reach my desired destination.
Then comes another difficult decision: choosing VETERINARY SCIENCE. It was a different stream and a future I had never originally planned for myself. I was stepping into an unfamiliar territory while still trying to make peace with the path I had left behind. I wondered whether I would be able to adjust. Would I be able to build a future I could be proud of? Had I made the right decision or was I simply learning to accept a situation I had not chosen initially?
These questions made the beginning of my new journey difficult. I was not only entering a different stream; I was also learning to let go of the expectations I had carried for so long. The art of letting go is not about giving up. Letting go is accepting that some chapters are meant to be remembered, not continued.
The Pressure to Fit In Vs. The Courage to Stand Out
We live in a generation that is more connected than ever, yet many of us feel emotionally disconnected. We have hundreds of contacts and countless online conversations to communicate. Still, there are moments when we struggle to find one person with whom we can honestly share what we are going through. I experienced the same when I was carrying a bundle of expectations during my exam preparation.
From an early age, we are taught to fit into certain expectations. Society gives us an idea of what success should look like, what a good career should be and which achievements deserve recognition. I felt this pressure when many of my friends secured admission to their dream colleges while I chose veterinary science. Their journeys seemed to follow the plan we had once shared, while mine was taking an unfamiliar direction.
I had to remind myself repeatedly that choosing a different stream did not mean choosing a meaningless future. Perhaps the courage to stand out is not always about doing something extraordinary. Sometimes, it is simply about accepting a path that looks different from everyone else's and having the patience to discover where it may lead.
The Price of Being Perfect
Somewhere along the way, I began to associate being successful with being perfect. Scoring well, making the right decisions and impressing others, avoiding mistakes, fear of disappointing our parents, teachers, friends and sometimes pushing ourselves to be so called as “BEING PERFECT.”
In this pursuit of perfection, we forget that being human means being imperfect. A mistake becomes something to hide. A disappointing result becomes something to be ashamed of. The constant effort to appear strong can leave us emotionally exhausted. True strength is not about pretending that everything is fine. It is about being honest enough to admit when something hurts. There is courage in saying, “I am struggling, but I am willing to try again.”
When Vulnerability Is Mistaken for Weakness
We often believe that strength means never crying, never feeling afraid and never showing disappointment. But emotions are not signs of weakness. They are part of being human. A heart that feels deeply may break at times but it can also heal. A person who experiences disappointment may eventually become more understanding towards someone else's struggles. Sometimes, the strongest people are those who quietly carry their struggles while continuing to show kindness to others. Sometimes, strength means admitting that we do not have everything figured out yet.
What Setbacks Teach ME
Setbacks have a strange way of introducing us to ourselves. When everything goes according to plan, we rarely question our habits, priorities or beliefs. It is often during difficult times that we begin to understand what truly matters to us. My NEET experience taught me that hard work and outcomes are not always directly connected. The discipline, patience and determination I developed while preparing for NEET did not disappear when I chose veterinary science. Those qualities became a part of me, ready to be used in a different journey.
Setbacks also teach us humility. They remind us that we cannot control everything, no matter how carefully we plan. There is a difference between two sayings, “I failed,” and believing, “I am a failure.” The first describes an experience. The second allows that experience to define who we are.
Resilience: The Courage to Begin Again
Resilience is often misunderstood as the ability to remain strong at all times. In reality, resilience does not mean that we never feel disappointed or discouraged. It means allowing ourselves to experience these emotions without allowing them to decide our future. Sometimes, resilience looks like opening a textbook again after a disappointing result.
The Strength I Discovered in the Dark
A seed does not become a tree overnight. It must first exist beneath the surface, surrounded by darkness, before it can begin to grow towards the light. When life pushes us down, we are given an opportunity to discover what we are made of. Struggle is not always our enemy. Sometimes, it is the sculptor that shapes us when no one is watching.
I am still discovering where my journey in veterinary science will lead me. My setback did not give me the answer I wanted. It gave me questions that helped me understand myself better. And perhaps that is what turning a setback into strength truly means. It means accepting what happened, learning what we can and choosing not to let one difficult chapter write the entire story. Sometimes, it is about finding the courage to rise when the world is moving ahead, when the future feels uncertain and when the only person who needs to believe in your next step is YOU.
A setback may change the direction of our journey, but it does not have to diminish the value of our destination.
